WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Patrick Cantlay of UCLA was named the Pac-10 Men’s Golfer of the Year and the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, while Bruin coach Derek Freeman was tabbed Pac-10 Coach of the Year in a voting by the Pac-10 men’s golf coaches. In addition, the 2011 All-Pac-10 Men’s Golf Team selected by the coaches was announced.
Cantlay, who hails from Los Alamitos, Calif., has set a UCLA freshman single season record by winning three tournaments. He leads the Bruins in scoring average (70.7), Top 10 results (7), rounds under par (15) and rounds under 70 (13). In 10 starts and 31 rounds, he is 13-under par. Earlier this season, he secured the consensus No.1 ranking, becoming the first UCLA freshman golfer to earn the nation's top billing. He was also named Pac-10 Golfer of the Month for February and earned Golfweek and GolfDigest/GolfWorld Player of the Week honors for March 7.
One of three finalists for The Hogan Award, Cantlay becomes the seventh Bruin all-time to earn Pac-10 Golfer of the Year, and is just the second individual in league history to earn both Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors in the same season (USC’s Jamie Lovemark in 2007).
Freeman, in his fourth year as head coach, led UCLA to three tournament victories in 11 Tournaments this season and finished in the top four in nine of those 11 events. UCLA’s three tournament wins came at the Gifford Collegiate Championship, Battle at the Beach and the Western Intercollegiate. The Bruins finished third at the Pac-10 Championship, the highest placing ever under Freeman’s direction. Only three previous UCLA coaches have been named Pac-10 Men’s Golf Coach of the Year (Ed Merrins - 1982, 1983; Brad Sherfy - 1998; O.D. Vincent - 2003, 2006).
